Let's Sort this Footage out

October 10, 2015

I have a lot of footage of myself and my family at my disposal. The main thing to do when making a documentary is sorting through it all to find the important bits and make decisions in what to show and what not to show. There is also of course the fact that a storyline is more interesting to viewers, so creating one out of the footage you might not necessarily have shot yourself is a challenge.

I've Skyped with my dad for a couple of times this week and he sent me a bunch of pictures of when I was younger, but also pictures of my great-grandmother, grand-mother and my parents when they were younger. I originally wasn't planning on using pictures, but now that I have so many and they go back so much further, it seems sad not to use them. It's impossible to get video footage of things in the past that were never recorded other than in photographs.

I don't actually have any pictures on my laptop older than 2010 (they year I bought it). The only reason I have all this old (2005-2010) footage is because my dad asked me to edit our home videos to better save them for the future.

I think the biggest challenge in all this is going to be making sure that the visuals of the old and new footage go well together. I guess I'll have to watch a bunch of documentaries about the past to see how they did it. =)
