How to start...

October 02, 2015

The Sunday before class ended with a Documentary without knowing that I would be shooting one myself. The 50 Year Argument has been on my list since I was that Susan Sontag attributed her book 'Regarding the Pain of Others' to Barbara Epstein. Now, I've never read the New York review of books, this however did not stop me from enjoying the documentary a whole lot. It of course helped that Martin Scorsese directed it.

Back to my own predicament. I need to make a short documentary film about identity, specifically my own. And all this without sound. Luckily Susan Sontag comes to the rescue once again.

The question of identity is always a difficult one to answer. 'Who are you?' is best answered within the context the question is asked in. However, I now need to make my own context. 'Who am I?' becomes less of a certainty and more of an exploration. What has shaped me, or is what shaped me really all that important anyway?

My current idea is to start with one of her quotes, followed by footage of me and my family. This will either be in pictures and film. My family is very into making videos during our holidays, so there will be more than enough footage to choose from.

The current list of ideas is as follows:
  • Susan Sontag quote with family footage
  • Susan Sontag quote with family pictures
  • Re-cutting #TinyAdventures footage into a world according to me.
  • My face intercut with things that make me me (planning, schedules, food, bed, books, DVDs etc.)
  • Animation of me (think Waltz with Bashir)

In the meantime, enjoy an insight into the first steps toward my documentary as part of my #TinyAdventures project.
