Research #5: Short Documentary Inspiration
January 08, 2016
I've found a website with all the short documentaries I ever wanted to watch (although I've never really looked at short documentaries before, I'm more of a feature length kind of gal). It's called Short of the Week and they have one channel completely devoted to short documentaries, ranging from 4 minutes to 20 minutes.
Can you read my lips?
'Can you read my lips?' shows hear people how difficult it is to lip read. Lip reading is only one way in which deaf people communicate, but it is a very difficult thing to do and no-one should ever assume that all deaf people are capable of it. The use of a prewritten script and actors could be argued to make this less of a documentary, but it does still record the ideas of a group of people. the imaginative use of subtitles added greatly to the video.
The christmas light killer
The man who turns out all the Christmas lights hates Christmas. In this short video we follow him as he runs out the large light display in his town, as he has been doing for the past 12 years. He explains his hatred for christmas and why he likes to run of the lights. The intercutting of the conversation with the actual turning off of the lights helps us understand the man in the video better and creates a more interesting dynamic.
You won't regret that tattoo
Several people talk about the tattoos they have and why they got them. Everyone in the video is above 40 years of age and only one of the regrets getting a tattoo. Most of the people in the video actually got their tattoos when they were already older. The explore the way the world reacts to them as an older generation with body art. They debunk the myth that 'you will regret that tattoo' when you're older.
